Magnesium Deficiency
Magnesium deficiency among U.S. adults is unprecedented and widespread. According to the National Institute of Health, 55% of the US population consume less than the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of magnesium, and 20% consume amounts significantly below the RDA [1].
- A large segment of the U.S. population may have chronic latent magnesium deficiency that has been linked to conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure (hypertension), premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and psychiatric disorders…among a staggering list of conditions.
- Additionally, magnesium deficiency is so prevalent among critically ill patients that physicians are encouraged to test serum magnesium levels in all critically ill patients [2]. A study conducted at the Intensive Care Unit of Los Angeles County/University of Southern California Medical Center determined that 65% of critically ill patients were magnesium?deficient [3].
- Why are so many of us deficient in magnesium? One reason is that many illnesses (both acute and chronic) trigger magnesium wasting (a rapid depletion of magnesium). Magnesium is lost more rapidly than it can be replaced. Another main reason is that the highly processed modern American diet has been stripped of essential magnesium. Although it might be possible for food manufacturers to fortify foods with magnesium, factors such as bioavailability, stability, and taste on the final product all have to be considered. Furthermore, the modern trend of utilizing water softeners and water purifiers has completely stripped magnesium out of the drinking water supply—so much so that bottled water companies are now selling magnesium?fortified water in an effort to replenish magnesium in the U.S. drinking water supply.

Magnesium Deficiency is Very Common, And Increases Your Risk of Heart Disease and Other Conditions
Despite magnesium's role in maintaining proper health, data from the most recent National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey suggest that many Americans fail to consume recommended amounts of magnesium (420 mg for men, 320 mg for women)[39]. Magnesium deficits have been linked to diverse ailments such as asthma, anxiety, and heart disease. Interestingly, while many Americans do not get enough magnesium, symptoms of magnesium deficiency are not often seen in the United States. "Magnesium is needed for so many different physiological processes that the body has a way of regulating its stores. So, while it is true that most Americans do not get the [recommended daily intake], it doesn't show up immediately as magnesium deficiency," explains Katherine L. Tucker, PhD, professor of nutritional epidemiology at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University.
Dr. Tucker cautions that while outward signs of magnesium deficiency are rare, there are consequences when magnesium is found at suboptimal levels. "It causes deficiencies in the body that only show up over time. When the cells are not getting enough [magnesium] to function optimally they wear down, which can lead to several different disease states in the body."
"Those of us working in the field [of magnesium research] feel there are harmful consequences [that result] from a shortage of magnesium including high blood pressure, osteoporosis, and atherosclerosis," says Robert Rude, MD of the University of Southern California's Keck School of Medicine.

Scientific studies with animals have revealed that severe deficiencies in any one single nutrient can result in a specific symptom, and in many cases death due to the failure of bodily functions associated with the depleted nutrient. In humans, deficiency in one nutrient may occur less often than deficiency in several nutrients.
WE CHALLENGE YOU TO COMPARE YOUR LABEL
Most excipients (synthetic additives) have been used in supplements and pharmaceutical drugs for a long time and as such have reliable safety profiles which meet U.S. pharmacopeia standards and FDA regulations. They have also been used in the food industry as additives for decades with no adverse effects encountered in people. Unfortunately, these additives inhibit the effectiveness of the nutrients.

Here are some of the most commonly used synthetic additives:

Accept No Imitation. Krebs Cycle Magnesium Gets the Job Done. Finally, a supplement with NO ADDITIVES.
Ingredients called organic salts in KREBS CYCLE MAGNESIUM that contain magnesium are food based. KREBS CYCLE MAGNESIUM could get up to 66.5% greater absorption and 48% greater retention and utilization for ATP production because of the receptor link compound ingredients (Mg glutamate, Mg Malate, Mg Citrate, Mg Aspartate, Mg succinate)[39].

Who may need extra magnesium?
Magnesium supplementation may be indicated when a specific health problem or condition causes an excessive loss of magnesium or limits magnesium absorption [2,5].
- Some medicines may result in magnesium deficiency, including certain diuretics, antibiotics, and medications used to treat cancer (anti-neoplastic medication) [39,2,3].
- Magnesium supplementation may be indicated for persons with alcoholism. Low blood levels of magnesium occur in 30% to 60% of alcoholics, and in nearly 90% of patients experiencing alcohol withdrawal [2]. Anyone who substitutes alcohol for food will usually have significantly lower magnesium intakes.
- Individuals with chronic malabsorptive problems such as Crohn's disease, gluten sensitive enteropathy, regional enteritis, and intestinal surgery may lose magnesium through diarrhea and fat malabsorption [2]. Individuals with these conditions may need supplemental magnesium.
- Individuals with chronically low blood levels of potassium and calcium may have an underlying problem with magnesium deficiency. Magnesium supplements may help correct the potassium and calcium deficiencies [39,4].
- Older adults are at increased risk for magnesium deficiency. The 1999-2000 and 1994-98 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys suggest that older adults have lower dietary intakes of magnesium than younger adults [2,5]. In addition, magnesium absorption decreases and renal excretion of magnesium increases in older adults [4]. Seniors are also more likely to be taking drugs that interact with magnesium. This combination of factors places older adults at risk for magnesium deficiency [4]. It is very important for older adults to get recommended amounts of dietary magnesium.
- Children and adolescents report higher need of supplementation as well. In a recent cardiovascular health study, adolescent vitamin and mineral supplement use was 17.6%. Adolescent vitamin and mineral supplements users in that study also had higher nutritional awareness, but also a higher nutritional deficiency, specifically magnesium. So, everyone including children and adolescents have a need for quality magnesium supplementation.
Why Most Magnesium Supplements Don't Work:
Most magnesium supplements don't work because of two factors. The first factor involves all the excipients (additives) not allowing the magnesium to be bioavailable. Bioavailability is defined as the body's ability to use the particular nutrient. Some things are more bioavailable than others. The second factor is that sometimes things are processed by your body before others, as is the case with minerals before vitamins.
HERE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT POINT:
You cannot expect ANY magnesium supplementation to benefit your body unless it contains a certain amount of elemental magnesium. You also do not gain any kind of benefit from magnesium supplementation when the pill you are swallowing contains additives like the ones we outline to the right of this publication. MAKE SURE YOU ASK FOR KREBS CYCLE MAGNESIUM! The only magnesium supplement with all of what you need and none of what you don't!
Signs of Magnesium Deficiency

These issues could indicate some other health issue. As always, it's advised to speak to your physician before supplementing your diet.
Why You Need to Supplement with Magnesium
Magnesium that would normally be present in food has been largely wiped out due to chemical fertilizers and pesticides, mono-agriculture, and modern food processing.
Since the advent of modern agriculture and the industrial revolution in farming in the early to mid-20th century, our soils have become depleted of large amounts of nutrients, especially minerals like magnesium.
Processed and packaged foods have virtually no magnesium - at least in a form which your body recognizes as food. We find ourselves eating more, but still undernourished because our bodies are not getting vital nutrients.
Every organ in your body requires magnesium in order to function properly. Magnesium is crucial in over 300 processes in the body, and produces the energy molecule ATP. ATP comes from a process your body goes through known as the Krebs Cycle. If this process is interfered with then your body will not get the vital energy it needs and will perform at substandard levels.
4 Reasons Why Magnesium Supplements Don't Work!
- The magnesium is not in a form your body recognizes as food and therefore is viewed by your body as a foreign substance that needs to be eliminated.
- The enteric coating (the outer layer of a tablet or capsule of a magnesium compound) can decrease bioavailability.
- The ingredients that are added to the magnesium compound such as the preservatives, filler ingredients and other additives to make the pill look pretty and last longer can interfere with the body's function to absorb the magnesium.
- Some medicines may result in excessive loss of magnesium or limit magnesium absorption including but not limited to certain diuretics, antibiotics and medications to treat cancer.
